Fourteen years after its founding in Portland in 1988, Northwest Software, Inc. has become one of the premier minority- and women-owned information technology and engineering consulting companies in the nation.
Founded by Sonal Shah, president, and Chetan Shah, vice president and treasurer, NSI today is at the forefront of information technology, leading the local industry in all aspects of growth, development and innovation.
NSI has worked to apply innovative and practical solutions to the problems of transforming information systems from an administrative tool to a strategic resource. With a focus on strengthening the link between management and technology, NSI has achieved contracts from many Fortune 500 companies and federal and local governments. NSI customers include high-technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard, ADP, IBM, Tektronix, Inc., and federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
From a start of only two consultants in 1988, NSI currently employs more than 100 professionals and a database resource of thousands of other available professionals. NSI professionals are highly qualified and bring to their positions more than 15 years of experience working with software integration and engineering methodologies in both governmental and commercial applications.
NSI gives a helping hand and takes great pride in “returning to the community” wherever it can. Sonal has been invited by Portland Mayor Vera Katz’s staff to co-chair the economic development committee for the City of Portland. In 2001, NSI also became an active member of the Oregon Entrepreneur’s forum in which it takes a leading role in assisting other smaller and start-up companies with their business questions. NSI’s employees, especially Sonal and Chetan, are actively involved in mentoring such companies, including reviewing business plans, business strategies, etc.
Sonal’s affiliations with other organizations include Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and the National Minority Development Council. Through her leadership, NSI is now a certified organization for both Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and the National Minority Development Council.
